14,052 currently-registered US aircraft carry a turboprop engine code in FAA's own records — everything from a Cessna Caravan to a King Air to a PC-12. It is a real segment, and buyers moving up from piston aircraft into it are making a bigger financial decision on the same kind of public record.
The screen is identical — the stakes are not
Registration status, accident and incident history matched by serial number as well as tail number, and filed liens or security agreements all apply exactly as they do to a piston single. What changes is what a bad answer costs you. A hidden accident history or an active lien on a $70,000 Cherokee is a bad afternoon. The same finding on a $1.5 million turboprop is a different order of problem, and it is worth running the check before you spend a dollar on travel, appraisal, or inspection scheduling.
What the public record cannot tell you
Turboprop engines run on cycles and hot-section inspection intervals, not just calendar time — a hard number set by the manufacturer, after which an overhaul is due whether the engine sounds fine or not. An engine approaching that number is a five- or six-figure line item hiding in plain sight, and it appears nowhere in FAA registration data or the NTSB database. It is in the logbooks, and only in the logbooks.
The same is true for avionics currency, prop overhaul status, and any airworthiness directives with recurring compliance intervals rather than one-time fixes. Records screen for the airplane's legal and accident history. They do not price the maintenance bill that may be sitting a few hundred hours away.
Order of operations
- Screen every candidate on the public record — registration, accident history by serial number, filed liens. Free or near-free, minutes per aircraft.
- Request logbooks and engine/prop time-since-overhaul records on anything that survives the screen.
- Only then pay for a pre-purchase inspection — on turboprops this often includes a borescope of the hot section, which is worth every dollar and is not optional the way it might feel optional on a simple piston single.
The economics work the same way they do at any price point: records rule out the obvious problems for almost nothing, so the expensive steps only get spent on an aircraft that already survived the cheap ones.
